Community, Communion, and Soulaan in Philadelphia

By Maroc | Soulaan Magazine

I had a great day! The weather was in the low 70s, plenty of sunshine, and just the right conditions for one of my favorite autumn accessories: a light jacket.

I was greeted by my community hosting a Fall Harvest Festival in Philadelphia, bringing neighbors together for an afternoon of fun, donations, and communion. The gathering was organized to support the local Community Development Board and help fund ongoing efforts to improve and invest in our community. It also marked the premiere of the new Outdoor Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Stand, an exciting addition focused on making fresh produce more accessible to local residents.

Since it was Halloween, I had to dress for the occasion as a cowboy. (I’m just biddin’. I always dress like this. 💀)

The atmosphere was wholesome, welcoming, and full of life. There was something for everyone: hot chocolate, cupcakes, freshly grilled food, free Halloween costumes, prizes, photo opportunities, and face painting. More importantly, there was an opportunity for neighbors to connect, meet one another, support local initiatives, and enjoy the simple experience of being together.

These are the kinds of gatherings that remind us what community actually looks like. Beyond social media conversations and public discussions, community is built through physical presence, shared experiences, mutual support, and the willingness to invest in the people and places around us.

Of course, I spent some time discussing genealogy and several Soulaan initiatives. Those conversations are always important because identity, heritage, and community development should not exist in separate conversations. Understanding who we are and where we come from can help inform what we build together and how we preserve it for future generations.

One particularly exciting development was the community’s interest in having me formally introduce Soulaan at an upcoming town meeting. I look forward to that opportunity and to sharing more about Soulaan’s historical framework, cultural identity, and ongoing initiatives with the wider community.

This is how meaningful introductions happen: through conversation, participation, relationship-building, and showing up. Not every opportunity begins with a formal presentation. Sometimes it begins with a plate of food, a cup of hot chocolate, and a conversation with your neighbors.

I’m grateful for the hospitality and the opportunity to connect with everyone who made the afternoon special. Community investment is more than funding projects. It is about cultivating relationships, creating access to resources, and establishing environments where people can thrive together.

If you’re Soulaan or an ally, I hope to see you at the next gathering!
